Mom
For as long as I remember Mom made this delicious pastry. She always called breakfast pastrys, kuchen. Kuchen being German for cake. Her mother was born in Germany and did not move here until she was 23. She had a very strong German accent and spoke broken English. (as I was told)

  • 1 pound of butter
  • 6 cups of flour
  • 6 egg yokes
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 pint of sour cream
  • 1 1/2 cups of chopped walnuts
  • mix with 3 egg whites and
  • sugar about 1/3 c
Christmas Kuchen Pastry

Mix butter and flour together. Then add egg yokes, 1 cup of sugar, baking powder, salt and sour cream. Divide dough into 4 parts. wrap each in wax paper and refrigerate overnight. Roll each out part on lightly covered board until it is about 18 inches. butter with melted butter and spread some of the egg whites. Sprinkle nuts and sugar. Roll and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees. These are the proportions in my Mom`s recipe with no time on the baking. I just made half the recipe and baked it for 40 minutes.
